When To File Your IRS Form 1040X Return

Retrieve copies of past tax returns and W2s previously filed with IRS.
For example, the 1040X Instructions tell you that you need to include a copy of the original tax return you are amending, including copies of any supporting documentation that you included with your original tax return.
Also, keep in mind that the IRS will charge you interest on taxes that were not paid by the date they were due even if an extension was filed. Further, the IRS will also charge you interest on penalties imposed for various reasons - from the due date of the original return.
