Alabama Playing Card Tax:
Wanna play some Texas Hold Em in the State of Alabama with your buddies? Well, when you go out to buy the playing cards, be prepared to pay a .10 cents for each deck that contains no more than 54 cards. Now, since every legit deck of cards has 52 regular playing cards and two Jokers, it would seem you won't get out of any store there without paying this tax.
Also, (pay close attention to this part) every legit deck includes a State Tax Stamp that is affixed to the package and supposedly it can only be removed with water or steam. So if you're found with a deck of playing cards that doesn't have that tax stamp, believe it or not, the cards can be confiscated as "contraband goods."
Property taxes in Alabama are based on the tax rate (millage rate) and the appraised value of the property.
Homeowners who are totally disabled and those over 65 having a net taxable income of $7500.00 or less per year with a principal residence and 160 acres adjacent thereto are exempt from paying county property taxes. Millage rates vary widely by city and county and the State rate for personal property tax is 6.5 %. Click Here For Detailed Alabama "PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTIONS" and "COUNTY MILLAGE RATES."
| Alabama Sales Tax: | General Rate: 4 % |

Alabama's cities and counties increase the sales tax rate in a given area by adding the a local sales tax to the general statewide rate of 4.00 %. Local sales tax rates range from 0.5 % to 8 % per City or County. You could have a sales tax rate of up to 12% in certain localities. Click Here For Detailed "LOCAL" Alabama Sales Tax and Use Rates
| Alabama Tire Tax: | $1.00 Per Tire |
(They call this tax a “Fee” in Alabama.)
The State of Alabama collects this "fee" from people who buy new tires from retail tire stores in Alabama.
Revenues from these fees are used to clean up the illegal dump sites for tires. This fee is earmarked for the disposal and recycling of scrap tires. Only federal, state, and local governing bodies are exempt from paying this fee. In order to qualify for the exemption, the organization must be part of the governing body.
