About the Publication

Plain-English tax information, reviewed by credentialed CPAs since 2007.

Easy Tax Information translates the 1,000+ pages of IRS code into the 15 minutes of reading you actually need. Every guide, calculator, and checklist on this site is built by licensed CPAs and Enrolled Agents and reviewed against the latest IRS Publication 17, so the average reader files $1,847 more in deductions than they would have guessed on their own.

A Note from the Founder

I started this site in 2007, the spring after I left the IRS.

Eleven years inside the agency — first at the Ogden service center in Utah, then at the Fresno center in California — taught me one thing above all: most Americans do not have a tax problem. They have a translation problem. The Internal Revenue Code runs to more than a thousand pages of dense statutory language. The instructions on every form are written by lawyers for lawyers. And the average household is left to guess which deductions they qualify for, in what order, and against which lines of which schedules.

I built Easy Tax Information to do that translation. Every guide you read here is written first in plain English by a CPA or Enrolled Agent, then passed through a 12-person review panel, then cross-checked against the current IRS Publication 17 line by line. Nothing goes live until a second licensed practitioner has read it cold and signed off.

That is the whole business. We do not prepare returns, we do not sell financial products, and we do not promise specific refunds. We write, we check, and we update — an average of 3.4 times per year for every guide, to keep pace with IRS guidance, court rulings, and inflation adjustments. If a guide is ever wrong in a way that costs you, our $10,000 accuracy guarantee covers the penalties and the CPA fees to fix it.

Editorial Process

Four gates stand between a draft and a published guide.

Every article, calculator, and checklist on Easy Tax Information passes through the same four-step review before it appears on the site — and is re-checked, on average, 3.4 times a year afterward.

01

Drafted by a credentialed practitioner

Every guide is written by one of our 12 licensed CPAs or 6 Enrolled Agents. Authors disclose their state license number on each byline and may not write outside their area of credentialed practice.

02

Reviewed by a second panel CPA

A different licensed practitioner on the review panel reads the guide cold, checks every IRS form reference against Publication 17, and either signs off or sends it back with required revisions. This second-review step is the one that 94% of competing tax sites skip.

03

Updated 3.4 times a year

Each guide is revisited an average of 3.4 times per year to track new IRS notices, federal court rulings, cost-of-living adjustments, and state-level legislative changes. Plain-English rewrites of all 28 IRS Schedules are updated within 48 hours of any post-tax-season revision.

04

Audited by Spicer Jeffries LLP

Once a year, the independent CPA firm Spicer Jeffries LLP audits our process — verifying the credentials of every contributing practitioner, sampling published guides for accuracy, and confirming that the review panel actually met. The audit letter is available on request.

$10,000 Accuracy Guarantee

If a guide is wrong, we cover the penalties and the CPA fees.

If following one of our published guides results in an IRS notice, we will pay up to $10,000 toward the resulting tax penalties plus the professional fees to amend and respond. The guarantee applies to every guide, calculator, and checklist on the site, and is backed by Easy Tax Information, LLC.

Scope & Disclosure

What we don't do — in plain English.

Easy Tax Information is an education and information publisher, not a tax preparer. We think it's easier to trust us when you know exactly where the line is.

We don't prepare your return.

We don't file on your behalf, e-file for you, or stand between you and the IRS. For filing services, you'll need a licensed preparer in your state. We can help you understand what the forms ask — we cannot sign the return for you.

We don't give legal or investment advice.

Our guides cover federal and state tax mechanics. They are not legal opinions, not estate planning, and not investment recommendations. Where a situation turns on state-specific case law or a regulated financial product, we say so and point you to a licensed professional.

We don't promise a specific refund.

We publish average outcomes from internal reader surveys — like the $1,847 in additional deductions our readers identified in their first session — with the methodology behind the number. We never guarantee a dollar figure, because we don't know your return.

We aren't affiliated with the IRS.

The IRS does not endorse, partner with, or recommend private tax websites. Easy Tax Information is an independent publisher headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO. Any reference to a specific IRS form, schedule, or line number is a citation — not an endorsement in either direction.
